University City


With the foresight of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the UAE Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, Sharjah has become one of the most important learning centres in the Middle East. One only has to visit the impressive University City to understand the vision that lies behind this achievement. A multi-dimensional education system with a wide and varied network of schools, colleges and institutions for further education has played a pivotal role in the development of Sharjah.

Sharjah’s University City comprises several magnificent buildings set within beautifully landscaped grounds. It should be visited for its Islamic architecture alone.

This huge campus development located to the east of the city in Al Mowaileh, opposite Sharjah International Airport, was founded in 1997 and contains the American University of Sharjah (AUS), University of Sharjah (UOS) – Men’s College and Women’s College, the Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT) – Sharjah Men’s College and Sharjah’s Women’s College. HCT is a pioneering project in the country providing students with professional training. The campus also houses the Dr. Sultan Al Qasimi Centre of Gulf Studies, Sharjah Police Academy, Institute of Training & Judicial Studies, Regional Centre for Educational Planning, College of Law and University City Hall.


American University of Sharjah

The American University of Sharjah (AUS) is a non-profit, higher education organisation owned by the Government of Sharjah. The University was founded in 1997 by His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the UAE Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, who is also the President of AUS. Whilst AUS applies the American education system, it is thoroughly grounded in Arab culture and is part of a larger process of the revitalisation of intellectual life in the Middle East.

AUS is a comprehensive co-educational university based on the American model of higher education and offers 26 majors and 42 minors at the undergraduate level, and 13 Master's degree programs running through the following academic divisions: College of Arts and Sciences, College of Engineering, College of Architecture, Art and Design and the School of Business and Management. All classes and administrative functions are conducted in English.

Over 5,000 students from all over the world attend classes at the university each year.

In its formative years, AUS benefited from associations with the American University in Washington DC, Texas A & M University and the American University in Beirut.
Today, AUS is accredited by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and is licensed in the United States by the Department of Education of the State of Delaware. The University is also licensed by the UAE Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, and all programs are recognized by the ministry and have been awarded either accreditation or accreditation-eligible status. All six of the Bachelor's degree programs in the AUS College of Engineering are accredited by ABET of the United States.

The University hosts a series of major productions and quality concerts throughout the year, produced by students, local and visiting artists and to which the public is welcome to attend.

Dr. Sultan Al Qasimi Centre of Gulf Studies

Located by the main entrance to University City, the Dr Sultan Al Qasimi Centre of Gulf Studies is a magnificent cornerstone providing researchers with comprehensive and integrated historical and geographical information tracing the development, history and heritage of life in the Arabian Gulf.

The centre contains a number of exhibits that come directly from His Highness’s private collection; original historical maps, the very first images of the region and rare coins with special relevance to the Gulf. Showcases highlight the published works of His Highness, along with certificates and medals awarded in honour of his academic and cultural achievements. The various types of traditional dhow are displayed upstairs alongside vessels from around the world – all of which played a part in the region’s maritime history.

The Archive Library at the centre consists of a collection of rare publications of historical reference covering the history of the Arabian Peninsula, and researchers have access to over one and a half million historical documents and records. 
A large fully equipped conference hall is dedicated for seminars and scientific lecturers.

Higher Colleges of Technology

The Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT) was founded in 1988 and forms one of the largest institutions of higher learning in the United Arab Emirates with over 16,500 students. HCT provides post-secondary education in business, education, engineering technology, information technology, communications technology and health sciences. HCT colleges place a strong emphasis on an innovative, project-driven and student-centred curriculum. English is the teaching language and faculty staff are recruited from around the world. Separate colleges are available for men and for women.

HCT has formal alliances with a number of international higher education and training institutions, and corporate partnerships with national and international companies. Some courses have international accreditation: for example, the HCT's Bachelor of Education degree was developed with, and is certified by, the University of Melbourne.

CERT (Centre of Excellence for Applied Research and Training) is the commercial arm of the Higher Colleges of Technology, developing and providing education, training and applied technology for public and private sector clients.

Institute of Training and Judicial Studies

Playing an important role in the development of the nation’s judicial workforce, the Institute of Training & Judicial Studies (ITJS) has a base in Abu Dhabi in addition to the branch in Sharjah. Acting as a central point for documenting judicial studies and research in the nation, ITJS is involved in setting and supervising training programmes for judges, public prosecutors and lawyers.

Keeping members and associates of the judiciary up to date with the latest UAE legislative developments and resolutions, training sessions are held for both experienced and novice judicial professionals.

ITJS also encourages supportive communication and knowledge sharing between regional and international judicial training institutes. With a strong management structure, detailed administrative support and the full resources of a well-equipped library and archive, ITJS continues to develop specialised training programmes and facilitate advanced judicial research and analysis. Significant experience in managing and overseeing the preparation and implementation of training sessions has led to an unrivalled ability to develop both theoretical and practical aspects of the judicial workforce.

Police Science Academy

The Police Science Academy offers academic degrees and awards in police sciences that are recognised by universities and higher institutions. The Academy is accredited by the UAE Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research.

Objectives of the Academy:

  • The vision of the Police Science Academy is to act as an accredited academic centre for police sciences and security research
  • Training police officers and security agents in stability, discipline and security to the level at which they can effectively contribute to the wellbeing of the emirate and its social and economic progress
  • Achieving a high level of education that contributes towards police performance and improved security
  • Offering the best facilities, surroundings and teaching staff to ensure that graduate cadets are scientifically trained to the best of their ability and versed in the values and traditions of Sharjah

Regional Centre for Educational Planning and Training

The centre aims at building the national and regional capabilities of students and provides training sessions in the field of educational planning and applied educational research.

As well as playing a significant role in the development of education in the Gulf region, the centre also raises awareness of topical issues concerning the progress of education within the neighbouring Arab countries.

The centre provides technical consulting services and research assessment to institutions, flexible training programs, and offers Arabic and English references, books and periodicals in the fields of planning of policies, management and leadership.

Skyline University College

Skyline University College, since its inception in 1990, has become one of the leading business education providers in UAE. Over the past 20 years and with over 3,000 graduates at both Undergraduate and Postgraduate level, the institution has carved a niche in business education. Skyline’s BBA programs (major in International Business, Information Systems, Travel & Tourism Management and Marketing) & MBA (emphasis on Marketing and emphasis on Finance) are accredited by the UAE Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MOHESR). Located next to University City, the Skyline University College campus is spread over forty acres of land and is equipped with world-class infrastructure for academic, extra-curricular and sporting activities.

The university runs a fully-fledged training department under the banner of Centre for Professional Development and Training (CPD) that offers Tourism, Hospitality, Logistics, Real Estate, IT and Management related short courses and seminars for the general public, corporations and industry. The Skyline University College also runs a Basic/Advanced Tour Guide course in collaboration with Sharjah Commerce & Tourism Development Authority.

University City Hall

University City Hall was built to provide researchers, pioneers and scholars with all the necessary cultural information available under one roof. The hall, topped with a fine dome bearing Islamic architectural design, is considered as one of the very few such halls in the Middle East and has a seating capacity for 1,325 people. The hall is fully programmed with state-of-the-art equipment and offers the latest in facilities.

University of Sharjah

The University of Sharjah (UOS) was established as a non-profit institution for higher education in October 1997. In less than a decade the University achieved academic accreditation for most of its programs at the Bachelor’s and Master’s levels. UOS offers separate colleges for men and women.

The university boasts degree programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels in many disciplines including the humanities, liberal arts and culture, social sciences, communication, engineering and architecture, business administration, applied sciences, Islamic law, common law, fine art and design, medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and health sciences.

The University also offers through its Community College, a large number of programs that prepare students for careers in community services and technical professions. In addition to its main campus in Sharjah city, there are campus facilities which provide education and training programs directly to several communities throughout the Emirate of Sharjah. A new branch of the university is located in Khorfakkan.

College of Health Sciences

The College of Health Sciences is among the University of Sharjah’s leading colleges. It is a non-profit educational organisation and was established in 1998. 
The college aims at providing a high quality university level education to graduates capable of improving and contributing to the development of medical and healthcare services in the future.

Located next to the college, the Sharjah Teaching Hospital is a private, non-profit 210-bed hospital with a further 114 dental chairs. The hospital is set to become the leading teaching hospital in the UAE with the objective of providing world standard healthcare to the Sharjah community.
